Everything You Need to Know About LEGO SMART Play
Read our introduction to LEGO SMART Play and first look at new LEGO Star Wars sets with SMART Play interactivity.
There's a new way to interact with your LEGO sets, and it's coming to a galaxy near you. LEGO SMART Play uses special bricks to bring your builds to life - so what do you need to know about this new line of LEGO tech?
LEGO SMART Play FAQs
Let's start by running through some of the FAQs about LEGO SMART Play, so you know the basics of what to expect from these special new bricks.
What is LEGO SMART Play?
LEGO SMART Play is a new system announced at the start of 2026. It uses special bricks, SMART LEGO Minifigures and scannable 'SMART Tags' so that your LEGO creations can react to you as you play with them.

How does LEGO SMART Play work?
LEGO SMART Play combines over 20 patented technologies including a computer chip smaller than a single LEGO stud, to allow LEGO bricks, Minifigures and Tags to interact with light and sound effects - and it's completely compatible with existing LEGO bricks to build bigger creations.
What can LEGO SMART Play do?
The LEGO SMART Brick is packed with the kind of technology you'd find in a smartphone, including:
- Accelerometers to detect motion
- Microphones to detect sound
- Sensors to detect light
- A mini speaker to make sound
- Multi-coloured light output
In a sense, it makes your LEGO creations 'aware' of their surroundings, so that they can respond appropriately when you play with them.
Do I need a smartphone/tablet?
No - LEGO SMART Play has been designed to allow real-world play, without a screen. It's all powered by the LEGO SMART Brick, which produces lighting and sound effects depending on how you interact with your creation.
The LEGO SMART Brick picks up on any nearby LEGO SMART Tags and LEGO SMART Minifigures, and changes its output to match them.
For example, the new LEGO SMART Star Wars sets include SMART LEGO Minifigures of Luke Skywalker and Yoda with audio of Luke's Jedi training, and even a LEGO Mos Eisley Cantina set that plays the music from the movie.

Is there a LEGO SMART Play app?
Yes, there's an app. It's mainly aimed at parents as a way to update and extend your child's LEGO SMART Brick. The app is called LEGO SMART Assist and it's not needed in order to start playing with LEGO SMART sets.
Does the LEGO SMART Brick need recharging?
Yes, the LEGO SMART Brick will need recharging occasionally, but it's equipped with wireless charging to make it as easy as possible to keep its built-in battery topped up. We've come a long way from bulky LEGO Technic Battery Boxes filled with disposable pencil batteries!

How long does the LEGO SMART Brick battery last?
A single charge should allow for up to 45 minutes of interactive play (to be fair, the Brick is very small!). If you have multiple LEGO SMART Bricks, you can charge your spares while you play.
How long does the LEGO SMART Brick take to charge?
It takes around 2.5 hours to fully charge a single LEGO SMART Brick. The SMART Charger has space for two Bricks, so you could have two spares charging while you're actively playing with a third!

New LEGO SMART Play Star Wars sets
The first LEGO SMART Play sets are all Star Wars themed - including a SMART-enabled version of one of the most popular LEGO sets ever, the Millennium Falcon!
As of March 2026, the eight new LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets are:
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play All-In-One: Darth Vader's TIE Fighter (75421)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play All-In-One: Luke's Red Five X-Wing (75423)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play All-In-One: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing (75427)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible: Millennium Falcon (75426)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible: Luke's Landspeeder (75420)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible: Yoda's Hut and Jedi Training (75422)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible: AT-ST Attack on Endor (75424)
- LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible: Mos Eisley Cantina (75425)
Here's the thing - you can currently ONLY get LEGO SMART Bricks and the LEGO SMART Charger with LEGO SMART Play All-In-One sets.
LEGO SMART Play Compatible sets include SMART LEGO Minifigures and/or SMART Tags, but NOT the LEGO SMART Brick that produces the actual lights and sounds.
That means if you want to enable the interactive lights and sounds on any of the LEGO SMART Play Compatible sets, you'll first need to buy LEGO Star Wars 75421, 75423 or 75427.

LEGO Star Wars 75421: Darth Vader's TIE Fighter
Price: £59.99
Release Date: Available Now
Ages: 8+
Pieces: 473
LEGO SMART Play: All-In-One
LEGO SMART Bricks: 1 (with LEGO SMART Charger)
LEGO SMART Minifigures: 1 (SMART Darth Vader)
LEGO SMART Tags: 1
LEGO Insiders Points: 480
Size: 10 x 11 x 15 cm (H x L x W)
Honestly this set is already great even before you activate your LEGO SMART Brick. It's suitable for younger builders with just under 500 parts, and assembles to create the Sith Lord's TIE Fighter, Imperial refuelling station and Rebel outpost.
There's a SMART Darth Vader Minifigure and a regular Rebel Fleet Trooper Minifigure, and a SMART Tag attached to the TIE Fighter to activate engine noise, laser shooting lights and even refuelling and repair sound effects.
And there's the potential for more in the future: the set includes a microphone which is currently not activated. With permission (and if an update is released) this could be turned on at a later date to enable voice interactivity.

LEGO Star Wars 75423: Luke's Red Five X-Wing
Price: £79.99
Release Date: Available Now
Ages: 6+
Pieces: 581
LEGO SMART Play: All-In-One
LEGO SMART Bricks: 1 (with LEGO SMART Charger)
LEGO SMART Minifigures: 2 (SMART Luke Skywalker and SMART Princess Leia)
LEGO SMART Tags: 5
LEGO Insiders Points: 640
Size: 6 x 22 x 19 cm (H x L x W)
The X-Wing fighter in this set isn't huge, but you also get a brick-built Imperial turret, transporter and command centre. Along with SMART Luke and Leia Minifigures, there are also regular LEGO Minifigures of a Rebel Crew Member and a Stormtrooper.
Although it's not strictly a SMART Minifigure, you also get an R2-D2 figure with its own LEGO SMART Tag, which allows it to interact in the same way.
With a total of five SMART Tags plus the two SMART Minifigures, this LEGO SMART Play All-In-One set offers a lot more functionality for not much more money than Darth Vader's TIE Fighter (75421), making it an excellent mid-range option to start with.

LEGO Star Wars 75427: Throne Room Duel & A-Wing
Price: £139.99
Release Date: Available Now
Ages: 9+
Pieces: 962
LEGO SMART Play: All-In-One
LEGO SMART Bricks: 2 (with 1x LEGO SMART Charger)
LEGO SMART Minifigures: 3 (SMART Luke Skywalker, SMART Emperor Palpatine and SMART Darth Vader)
LEGO SMART Tags: 5
LEGO Insiders Points: 1,120
Size: 14 x 49 x 29 cm (H x W x D)
This is the top-end set of the three LEGO Star Wars All-In-One SMART Play sets, with nearly 1,000 pieces and an extra LEGO SMART Brick for two-way interactivity.
You get SMART Minifigures of Luke Skywalker AND Darth Vader, as well as Emperor Palpatine, and the moving 'duelling arms' have space to add the SMART Bricks to enable lightsaber light and sound effects.
There are five SMART Tags (although two of those are used for the lightsaber duel effects). The other three effects include the A-Wing's engines, the Death Star's turret lasers, and Emperor Palpatine's throne, which can play The Imperial March.
What do we think?
Overall, it's impressive technology. To pack so many sensors, lights, speakers AND a battery into something the size of a LEGO brick is mind-blowing if you grew up with LEGO Technic battery packs that took SIX 1.5V AA batteries and weren't rechargeable.
The three LEGO SMART Play All-In-One Star Wars sets give you a choice of entry-level price points, so you can get your hands on a LEGO SMART Brick and Charger. It's not yet clear if the LEGO SMART Brick will ever be sold separately, but it feels likely at some point in the future.
All of the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play Compatible sets are worth a look too. There are some iconic scenes, such as the Millennium Falcon and the Mos Eisley Cantina (although that set doesn't include a Han Solo Minifigure, for some reason...!)

Final Thoughts
People are expecting A LOT from these first sets. Remember that the sounds are created by the SMART Brick's on-board synthesiser - they're not recorded soundbites from the movies - so they might not sound exactly like the on-screen version.
With the All-In-One sets, you're paying for the SMART Brick and Charger, so you have to factor that into the value too. The Compatible sets give you a lot for the price, but without the SMART Brick, so it's a trade-off either way.
But it's an excellent starting point and we're excited to see what LEGO Star Wars SMART Play displays you all build, especially as you extend these eight scenes with your own existing LEGO Star Wars sets!
