These LEGO Space Sets Will Have You Over the Moon

As NASA prepare to launch astronauts around the Moon this April, we look at five fantastic LEGO space sets to celebrate.

LEGO Space Sets Will have You Over the Moon Banner

NASA's Artemis II mission returns humans to the Moon in April 2026 for the first time since December 16th, 1972 - and we've picked out some LEGO space sets to celebrate the occasion.

It's more than half a century since Apollo 17 mission commander, astronaut Gene Cernan, said: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return - with peace and hope for all mankind."

To date, those are the last official words spoken from the surface of the Moon. While Artemis II is 'just' a fly-by sightseeing trip, it's a step towards humans leaving fresh footprints on the surface.

As we embark along this exciting journey, it's a great excuse to build some of the best LEGO space sets and create a space-themed LEGO bedroom display. Let's take our own sightseeing tour of the following five builds:

These are just a handful of the LEGO space toys currently available - the LEGO Shop website lists 23 products under the 'Space' interest, including the coming-soon LEGO Ideas Tintin Moon Rocket (21367), which also launches in early April!

LEGO Icons Artemis Lifestyle on a table

LEGO Icons NASA Artemis Space Launch System (10341)

Price: £219.99

Release Date: Available Now

Ages: 18+

Pieces: 3,601

LEGO Insiders Points: 1,760

Size: 70 x 27 x 30 cm (H x W x D)

LEGO Icons NASA Artemis Space Launch System (10341) is one of the tallest sets of recent years, standing over two feet high on its mobile launch tower.

The Space Launch System, or SLS, contains the Orion capsule, perched on top of a multi-stage rocket with a pair of solid-fuel boosters.

Although it's designed to be the star of any grown-up's LEGO space display, with an 18+ age rating, there's also plenty of educational value in this highly accurate build.

Some of the learning opportunities for younger space exploration enthusiasts include:

  • Detailed recreation of real-world launch systems
  • Retractable launch tower umbilicals, crew bridge and rocket supports
  • Detachable solid-fuel rocket boosters
  • Separating rocket stages

To complete your LEGO desktop display, there's also a separate replica of the Orion module with fold-out solar panels, which can be shown alongside the SLS.

Make no mistake, this is a BIG and impressive build - and it's perfect if you want your LEGO bedroom display to have plenty of height, without taking up too much floor space!

Pick up our NASA Artemis Space Launch System Display Case for LEGO 10341 with a custom printed vinyl background, and keep your LEGO space display free from moon dust.

LEGO Technic Artemis Space Launch with LEGO Space Background

LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221)

Price: £54.99

Release Date: Available Now

Ages: 9+

Pieces: 632

LEGO Nanofigures: 4x Astronauts

LEGO Insiders Points: 440

Size: 70 x 16 x 8 cm (H x L x W)

Another super-tall Artemis SLS LEGO set, LEGO Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket (42221) rocks up at around 70cm in height again.

This set is a simplified build of the Artemis SLS rocket, with a lower age range to match. LEGO Technic enthusiasts as young as 9 should be able to assemble it and learn from all the Technic-enabled moving parts.

Some of those interactive features on LEGO Technic 42221 include:

  • Hand-cranked animation of three-stage rocket separation:
    • Solid boosters separate
    • Core stage detaches
    • Upper Orion stage detaches

LEGO Nanofigures are always adorable, and it's a nice touch that this set includes a full complement of crew in the form of four LEGO Nanofigure Astronauts. Stand them at the bottom of the SLS Rocket and you really get that sense of scale.

Again, a build of this size deserves to be pride of place in any LEGO display at home. Our 39 x 32 x 73cm Display Case gives you the height you need to fit this set, with a little extra width to keep your display steady if it gets bumped or knocked.

LEGO Technic Moon Rover Space Vehicle with Space Background

LEGO Technic Lunar Outpost Moon Rover Space Vehicle (42211)

Price: £89.99

Release Date: Available Now

Ages: 10+

Pieces: 1,082

LEGO Insiders Points: 720

Size: 13 x 31 x 19 cm (H x L x W)

NASA have announced that the planned Lunar Gateway orbiting space station is on hold - and that instead, work is to focus on building a permanent human lunar base on the Moon's surface.

Lunar Outpost is a real-life organisation that was awarded the NASA contract to build moon rovers (or Lunar Terrain Vehicles) for the Artemis programme.

As the name suggests, LEGO Technic Lunar Outpost Moon Rover Space Vehicle (42211) is inspired by those real-world designs, and builds a Moon rover vehicle along with smaller mining rover and MAPP rover (Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform).

The build has plenty of LEGO Technic features to bring it to life:

  • 4-wheel steering and rocker suspension
  • Deployable solar panels
  • Rotating arm to lift and deploy the mining rover

It's cute that LEGO Technic 42211 also includes plenty of Moon rock elements in different shapes and colours, which can be scooped up by the mining rover and stored inside its sample container.

Our made-to-measure Lunar Outpost Moon Rover Space Vehicle Display Case for LEGO 42211 is your friend if you want to show off your completed set, while keeping it safe from dust, damage or misplaced Moon rocks.

LEGO Icons Shuttle Carrier Lifestyle in front of a red wall

LEGO Icons Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (10360)

Price: £199.99

Release Date: Available Now

Ages: 18+

Pieces: 2,417

LEGO Insiders Points: 1,600

Size: 27 x 63 x 54 cm (H x L x W)

Regular readers might remember our deep-dive into the real-world history behind LEGO Icons Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (10360) back in September.

It's a genuinely iconic build worthy of the LEGO Icons name, and combines both the Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft AND the NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise into a single epic LEGO space display set.

At 63cm long, it rivals the Artemis SLS LEGO sets for scale - especially as the brick-built Boeing aeroplane has a wing span of nearly 54cm.

Despite being an Adults Welcome LEGO display set, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft has plenty to explore for builders of all ages:

  • Turn a dial to deploy the 18-wheel landing gear
  • Detach the shuttle's engines and stow in the cargo bay
  • Attach the shuttle to the carrier aircraft for its piggy-back ride into orbit!

Obviously, it's a big bonus that the Space Shuttle Enterprise is included in this set. It would be the perfect companion to the LEGO Icons Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D (10356) as part of a space-and-sci-fi-themed LEGO bedroom display.

We have several options to display LEGO Enterprise sets (both the real-world NASA Shuttle and the Star Trek Federation flagship...!)

Again, there are optional printed vinyl backgrounds for both of the acrylic display cases, to give the impression of both vessels in flight.

3-in-1 Space Astronaut, Space Dog, Spaceship, Astronaut

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Space Astronaut (31152)

Price: £44.99

Release Date: Available Now

Ages: 9+

Pieces: 647

LEGO Insiders Points: 360

Size: Over 27cm tall (astronaut)

We end with an always-satisfying LEGO Creator Space set. LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Space Astronaut (31152) can be built, rebuilt, and rebuilt again to create three different LEGO space toys.

The configs available in LEGO Creator 31152 are:

  • Astronaut toy with detachable jet pack
  • Space dog toy with moving legs and tail
  • Minifigure-scale Space Viper jet craft

You don't get a pilot with this set, so you'll need to add your own favourite LEGO Astronaut Minifigure or just keep the golden capsule dome closed on the Space Viper and pretend there's someone inside at the controls.

That's a small gripe for a hugely versatile set - LEGO Creator 31152 gives you a realistic astronaut figure, a cute and happy space dog and/or a futuristic spacecraft, all in a single set.

It's no surprise that this one is rated 4.9 stars in customer reviews. We decided it was worthy of its own made-to-measure display case (for the astronaut config) and our Space Astronaut Display Case for LEGO 31152 would be the perfect finishing touch to any LEGO space display.

Final Thoughts

About seven in ten of us were born AFTER the Apollo 17 mission ended - which means no human has set foot on the Moon during our lifetimes.

Yet we take it for granted that humans are capable of leaving our planet's surface, and even living for months at a time on the International Space Station.

It's a genuinely exciting prospect that a crewed mission will soon fly past the Moon, ahead of future lunar landings and even a permanent human base up there.

Some of the most recent LEGO space sets give an idea of the scale and complexity of the vehicles that will get us there - as well as equipment like the Moon Rover that will help us to explore the surface.

You don't have to be a budding astronaut or aerospace engineer to enjoy building your LEGO space display. This is an adventure for all humankind - and it's one worth celebrating!

Which are YOUR favourite LEGO space sets? Have you started building a LEGO space display for your office or bedroom yet?
