Why Does iDisplayit Put a Stud Count in Their Product Descriptions?

What is the LEGO stud count on an iDisplayit display case? And how does it relate to the size of the case? Find out all you need to know in this guide!

iDisplayit Stud Count in Description Banner

When you shop for iDisplayit display cases, you'll always see a line in the description that says (for example) "The base has space to fit 40x40 studs." Those numbers vary depending on the size of the case - so what exactly do they mean?

They refer to the number of LEGO studs that can fit along each dimension of the base (L x W). A single LEGO stud fills an 8mm square, so you can take the internal dimensions of the base and multiply by 1.25 to work out how many studs will fit.

So that you don't need to do the maths yourself, we've already done it, and that's the stud count provided in each product description. In some cases, it can also help you to decide if a certain build will fit inside the case or not.

Common sizes of LEGO Baseplates

The classic LEGO Baseplate measures 32x32 studs. At 0.8cm per stud, that's interior dimensions of 26 x 26cm on an iDisplayit display case. Allowing for the thickness of the case itself, this gives exterior measurements of about 28 x 28cm.

Some other common sizes of LEGO Baseplates and the interior display case size to match:

Most iDisplayit display cases come with a smooth 3mm acrylic base in black or white, unless specified in the description. Exceptions include our LEGO Minifigure display cases, which are fitted with 1x2 secure studs to hold each figure in place.

How to add studs to your iDisplayit display case

If you want to add studs to your iDisplayit display case, it's just a matter of checking the product description. Or if you know the inner measurements of the case in cm, just multiply them by 1.25 to get the number of 8mm studs you can fit.

You can then add the perfect size and number of LEGO Baseplates to create a wall-to-wall carpet of studs in your display case, ready to hold your set in position.

A 26 x 26cm square LEGO display case is just right for the classic 32x32 studs LEGO Baseplate, but of course the size of display case you need will depend on the size of the set you want to put in it.

If you're thinking about adding a studded base to your display, and you're shopping for iDisplayit cases by size, it's worth keeping all of this in mind - as you might opt for a slightly larger case that can take a whole Baseplate.

LEGO Lord of the Rings Display Case with Custom Background and Floor

Build a custom base, floor or diorama

Once your studs are slotted into place, you can build onto them to create a custom surrounding for your set. This can add some real pizazz to your LEGO display, especially when combined with an iDisplayit printed background.

Some of the ways you can do this include:

  • A custom floor e.g. sand for LEGO Star Wars displays, snow for the Hoth or for Christmas sets, grass for woodland and medieval builds.
  • Exposed studs to secure LEGO Minifigures and small brick-built figures and vehicles in place, so that they don't fall over if knocked or jolted.
  • Create a mini diorama by adding landscape elements and scenery that forms a complementary surround for your set.

Remember, you can use multiple LEGO Baseplates to cover larger cases. For example, one of the biggest iDisplayit display cases is the 78 x 78cm LEGO Star Wars UCS Republic Gunship Display Case for LEGO 75309.

That makes it a square LEGO display case with space for 96x96 studs, or a total of nine classic 32x32 Baseplates in a perfect 3x3 square. And yes, slotting those into place is as satisfying as it sounds!
