Star Wars: Andor Lands on Disney+ On 21st September

What should we expect from this new Star Wars show?

There has never been a better time to be a Star Wars LEGO fan, with more LEGO sets, TV shows and films being released over the last few years than you can shake a lightsaber at.

The next show to land in the Disney+ starship hangar is Star Wars: Andor. It is safe to say that this show has fallen slightly under the radar at the sensor array, overshadowed by the much-hyped Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. Nevertheless, anticipation is building faster than lightspeed for the new show following the recent teaser and official trailer release, which gave us several planet’s worths of characters, locations and plot clues to mull over.

This month also saw the release of a new Star Wars LEGO set from the upcoming show – Ambush on Ferrix (75338) – leaving many to speculate whether future models from the series will be forthcoming.

What is Star Wars: Andor About?

Star Wars aficionados will recognise Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) as the tough, conflicted, but ultimately heroic Rebellion operative from 2016’s widely successful Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As the first film release to be set outside of the traditional Skywalker Saga, fans at the time were not necessarily sure what to expect. The film ultimately became one of the most well-received offerings from the Star Wars Disney era, praised for its cinematography, vintage Star Wars elements, exciting story and bold conclusion.

Andor will act as a prequel series to the successful film, charting Cassian’s journey as he experiences the brutality of the new Galactic Empire and learns to fight back. The show is set in a very interesting timeframe between the original and sequel trilogy – it is a period of uncertainty as the new regime rises in power while the fledgling rebellion takes shape. As a still largely untapped period of Star Wars history, this gives the showrunners a lot of scope to explore new characters, settings and stories.

Like Rogue One, it also gives the show scope to explore the darker, grey morality behind the Rebel Alliance. The original Star Wars trilogy was always presented as a classic good vs evil story. Over the years, we have seen the space opera expand to explore the more complicated reality of conflict.

As well as the title character, the new trailers showed other pre-established characters from Star Wars lore, such as Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera. We were particularly excited to see shots of Mon Mothma in the senate chamber – this looks to be the first time we will see the backstage machinations and inner workings of the Imperial Senate on screen. It will also be great to see what Saw gets up to, as he only appeared briefly in Rogue One (although he has appeared in games and animated series).

The show also features new characters, such as Luthen Rael, played by veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård. Fans will recognise him from such franchises as Marvel (appearing in several Thor films), Pirates of the Caribbean, and Dune, amongst others.

What Other Star Wars Series Are Coming Out This Year?

Force aficionados can look forward to the animated series Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi later this year, which promises to explore different Jedi characters during the prequel trilogy era. The series was created by Dave Filoni, who acted as executive producer on the brilliant series Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

Moving ahead to next year, fans can also look forward to the live-action Star Wars: Ahsoka, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. As a spin-off to The Mandalorian, the new show will focus on Ahsoka Tano’s journey during the same timeframe.

Are There Star Wars: Andor LEGO Sets?

Cassian Andor fans can already purchase Ambush on Ferrix (75338), which was released on 1st August 2022. This set features a Mobile Tac-Pod gunship, a speeder bike and three characters – Cassian Andor, Syril Karn and Luthen Rael. We cannot be too sure where this scene takes place in the new series, but it looks to involve a high-speed chase – check out the above image from the new show.

Ambush on Ferrix (75338) is available on the LEGO website for £69.99. US purchasers can also grab the set for $69.99 on the LEGO US store.

We are still waiting for LEGO to confirm whether there will be any more releases, but assuming the show is a hit, we anticipate at least a few more. It would be great to see more of the new planets, or the Imperial Senate Chamber represented as brick-built collectables. We’ll also be keeping a mindful Jedi eye out for any new ships and vehicles once the new show premieres.
