Collection of pictures of LEGO space themed sets.

Carrying on from May the Fourth and its galactic adventures, LEGO now is focussing on the Space theme - including some interesting new middle-of-the-month releases. The Gift With Purchases this month are also LEGO Space themed, which you can out more about in our May LEGO Gift With Purchases blog.

To blast off this space collective, we will first be taking a look at LEGO 42182 NASA Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle – LRV.

LEGO Technic 42182 NASA Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle - LRV

£189.99, available to pre-order now and will ship from August 1st 2024.

Apollo 17 was the 11th and final mission of the Apollo Space Programme. It blasted off on 7 December 1972 and returned on 19 December 1972. The crew spent over 70 hours on the lunar surface, breaking the previous record for the longest stay on the moon.

This 1,913 piece LEGO Technic model recreates a stunning displayable model of the lunar rover that was carried by Apollo 17. The set includes three equipment sets, with each of them coming with their own detailed information tile. The rover unfolds, and the equipment can be attached to it.

The set has a communications unit and a model battery pack with heating and cooling elements, alongside some tools to help find lunar samples. A homage is paid to Big Muley, the most significant rock sample (26lb/11.7kg) returned to Earth from the moon as part of the Apollo programme by Apollo 16. The rock is named after Bill Muehlberger, the Apollo 16 Field Geology Team Leader.

LEGO Technic 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

£89.99, available now

This is a cargo transporting spaceship complete with a cargo pod. The cargo pod is used to transport the mini space rover that we get to build as part of 1,365 pieces. The VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship uses a gear system to turn the engine, extend and retract the landing arm as well as a lowering claw to move the cargo pod. These LEGO Space-themed sets use a space airlock element that allows them to connect to other compatible LEGO Space-themed sets (sold separately). Great for budding engineers and astronauts.

LEGO Technic 42158 NASA Mars Rover Perseverance

£84.99, available now

These 1,132 pieces enable us to create not just the Mars Rover but also the companion helicopter, Ingenuity, that was used to test flight on Mars. The Perseverance landed at the edge of Jezero Crater on 18th February 2021. Scientists wanted samples from this area as they believed it was once flooded with water. The Rover searches for ancient microbial life to aid NASA’s quest to explore the past habitability of Mars.

The LEGO Technic NASA Mars Rover Perseverance features 360-degree steering and a moveable arm, plus suspension that is fully articulated so that the vehicle can maintain traction on uneven surfaces. Also included are a buildable power unit, cameras, scientific instruments and an antennae. This build also has an augmented reality app that allows us to learn more about the Rover’s mission and Mars’ environment.

LEGO 21340 Tales of The Space Age

£44.99, available now

LEGO Space-themed artwork in the form of four connectable 3D LEGO postcards that are inspired by various elements of 1980s sci-fi. The four postcards depict an observatory, a Moon base and lunar eclipse, a black hole and a shuttle blasting through space. The four scenes can either be displayed together or individually and have the option to be freestanding or to be hung on a wall. The beauty of these is that they can also be customised, so get those spare bricks out and get creative.

LEGO Technic 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover

£129.99, available now

LEGO has used 1,599 pieces to create a highly detailed space vehicle that is comprised of many realistic components, such as an expanding truck bed, working suspension and crane. The crane can be used to manoeuvre the buildable robot rover and fuel reactor.

Inside the Rover are the crew's living quarters that feature a shower, toilet, seating area, treadmill and even a fridge. Plus, there is an elevator element, recycling and sample containers for gas and water. LEGO 42180 also uses the spare airlock element to attach to other compatible sets (sold separately).

LEGO 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery

£169.99, available now

The NASA Space Shuttle Discovery was the 35th mission of NASA’s space programme. Launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 24 April 1990, its primary aim was to deploy the Hubble Telescope into low Earth orbit. Five crew members manned the STS-31 mission, which lasted just over five days.

LEGO 10283 provides us with 2,354 bricks to build a model of the Hubble Space Telescope as well as the Space Shuttle Discovery. The Hubble Space Telescope has an aperture door and moveable solar panels.

The Discovery’s payload bay opens to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope so that it can traverse space. The elevons (combined elevator and aileron) can be adjusted and landing gear engaged after re-entry. The cockpit opens up to reveal seating for the five crew members.

LEGO 31152 Creator 3-in-1 Space Astronaut

£44.99, available now

LEGO has created a fantastic space-themed Creator set here. The astronaut has a detachable jet pack and the golden visor on the helmet opens up to reveal seating for a LEGO Minifigure (not included). The astronaut’s limbs and fingers are all articulated, enabling them to be displayed in some far-out poses.

The futuristic space dog build is cute, with poseable legs and a tail. The third build is the Space Viper Jet which cleverly uses the gold helmet visor to be the domed lid of the cockpit.
